A Freelancer's Guide To Essay Writing: Learning The Essentials

A freelance writing career can be a rewarding experience, and can usually keep the bills paid! One of the things that many freelancers enjoy most about the job is that they are free to work on a variety of different projects, for different clients all over the world. Sometimes, a freelancer is called upon to write sales letters or press releases or product reviews. But one skill that we all must master is the art of writing an essay.

The sooner you become familiar with the essentials of essay writing, the faster you will be able to move up the freelance food chain. We have put together a review of some essential points to keep in mind when you sit down to compose your next Pulitzer prize winning essay....

Never Forget The Five Paragraph Format

The five paragraph essay format is one that you will have learned way back in high school, possibly before. Any essay consists of an introduction, a conclusion, and in between the two, the body paragraphs. Your introduction will include a thesis statement or an introduction to the topic of your paper to your reader. You will follow with evidence that supports your position or ideas that you put forth in your introduction. Finally, you will compose a concluding paragraph that wraps the piece up.

Even if your essay is longer, or shorter than five paragraphs, nine times out of ten this is the structure you should use to frame your composition.

Different Genres Require A Slightly Different Approach

There are several varieties, or genres of essays. The most common are perhaps the narrative, the argumentative, the cause and effect essay and the descriptive. This list is by no means complete, and some essays make use of features found in different genres.

Narrative and descriptive essays and articles are ones that tell a story or describe a person, place or event. They may be written in the first person, and the language the writer uses often involves many adjectives, adverbs and phrases designed to elicit an emotional response or a connection between the writer and the reader.

Academic, research and cause and effect essays are looking to describe how or why a certain process occurs. They need not be cold and clinical in the style of writing used, but they must be concise, rational and clearly laid out.

You Always Have Time To Edit And Proofread

And if you don't have time, make time! Editing and proofreading any essay or article is a critical final step that you must do before considering an assignment complete. Nothing is worse that a well-written essay filled with spelling and grammar mistakes. It screams amateur, and will win you neither friends, nor clients!

not only a part-time work

Some writers start off doing a few projects that begin as part-time work. As they see their potential they want to know how this can become their full-time job. A few writers are fortunate enough to say they earn enough to make a living. Others may think this is impossible but possibilities are endless. Overall, being a freelance writer is excellent! Some may not have the exact words to describe the feeling, but they can see themselves writing for a very long time. The benefits are great but when you feel this is your calling you feel right at home.
